Flashback #2: GIANT FIX/dance in a pool
The second in our “Flashback Friday” series is already out of chronological order, fast-forwarding to 2005. I don’t know why I’m racing forward, other than it’s May and I’m thinking about being outside…though not necessarily dancing outside. Certainly one of our most memorable productions was GIANT FIX, the dance in a pool. Staged in the outdoor, Olympic-sized pool at Hamlin Park, the work was a...

Flashback #1: May 2002
In our current reflective mood during our 10th anniversary year, we are doing some thumbing through the memory pages of our body-of-work album. This is an exercise that is simultaneously affirming, humbling, and mostly - surprising - at the sheer amount of creative work by so many artists/collaborators that has been built and shared with audiences over this past decade.
We’d like to share...

Dancer Perspectives: Endurance Performance
Our February show at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance presented several challenges for the performers - dancing on concrete, indeterminacy in audience placement, but most considerably - the sheer duration of it. They danced for three and 1/2 hours, with very short breaks to hydrate, towel off…and mutter a few curse words.
Our Harris Theater project was designed to give you unique...

"Stupormarket" preview in TimeOut Chicago →
“Stupormarket succeeds at bringing a situation we regard with anger, frustration and fatigue a fresh new perspective. There’s no shortage of editorials bemoaning our financial future, but this one has its sleeves rolled up, bearing ideas that actually help.” Zac Whittenburg TimeOut Chicago

STUPORMARKET!
Stupormarket is The Seldoms’ new dance theater work about the economic blowout and the ongoing wobbly recovery. From the luxury market to the unemployment line, and the trading floor to the housing market, Stupormarket ranges broadly across the economic terrain and two different camps of economic thought, neither of which warned loudly enough.
Directed and choreographed by Artistic Director...

Following our trip to Krasnoyarsk, Russia (Siberia!) to teach and perform at the Isadora International Festival of Contemporary Dance, we sat down with TimeOut Chicago’s Dance Editor, Zachary Whittenburg, to share our adventure!

About "Marchland" - Fraser's notes about the video
The film for Marchland uses “Crevice” as a visual and conceptual point of departure. “Crevice” was an animation, produced in 2007, in collaboration with Nicholas O’Brien. This film was made by drawing directly onto 16mm clear leader, a very minute surface that repressed the gesture required to make marks on this filmstrip. These miniature inscriptions took on a capricious...

Kudos for "Marchland" collaborator TIM DAISY
ABOUT TIM DAISY
“His work with Ken Vandermark is what initially turned me on. Like Ken, his playing lets you know he knows his instrument and the tradition, yet is just enough outside to let you know he’s an artist, stretching and searching for the unknown. Hearing him in the group Klang this past summer really opened my ears to the shapes and colors he can paint on the drums.”

About "Marchland" - Notes about the Set
I am building two walls, which will be suspended on both sides of the stage and will project horizontally into the auditorium. The purpose is to bridge the gap between performance and audience. The constructions are based on my sculptures, which reflect my interest in such things as decaying architectures. The work occupies an in-between space, somewhere between construction and demolition. The...
Meet our Russian friends!
During my January residency in Krasnoyarsk with the Elena Slobodchikova Dance Company, I developed a new section of Marchland, the evening-length work that has been my major focus this season. Marchland is about spaces - contested spaces, border spaces, remote spaces. I began the process in the studio with the Russian dancers with a discussion; asking them to think and talk about their notions of...

Return from Krasnoyarsk
As part of The Seldoms’ Russia Exchange 2010, I headed to Krasnoyarsk (Siberia!) for 8 days in January to work with four dancers of the Elena Slobodchikova Dance Company. Krasnoyarsk is deep within Siberia, a 5-hour flight eastbound from Moscow, and directly north of Thailand - it’s just about on the other side of the globe.
The trip was many things - challenging due to extreme...
